Glamping is defined as glamorous camping. While I fully understand the concept of camping and have done it quite a few times, I must admit that I don’t particularly enjoy it. Now glamping on the other hand is right up my alley. AfriCamps has perfected the art of glamping in the Western Cape and have just added their newest addition – AfriCamps Wilderness at Oakhurst farm. We were invited to experience this new Garden Route accommodation during its opening weekend.
AfriCamps at Oakhurst is situated in Hoekwil along the Seven Passes road just outside Wilderness. The route is currently undergoing road works and as such has 2 stop-and-go systems in place so you’ll have to plan your arrival time with that in mind. The entrance leading to the tents is a 3km gravel road which can easily be driven by a normal sedan.
We arrive at dusk; the campsite is illuminated with lanterns and a fire is already going. I can easily see myself staying here for way longer than a weekend…
AfriCamps Wilderness Accommodation
The AfriCamps accommodation is an absolute pleasure to stay in. The luxury tents sleep five persons each and are fully equipped – all you need to bring is your food! And if you don’t feel like bringing that along, you can pre-order a breakfast basket and braai pack which will be delivered straight to your tent. You don’t have to worry about getting cold either; we were kept warm by the fireplace, air conditioner and electric blanket.
As morning broke, the mist rolled over the Outeniqua Mountains and we sat on the verandah while sipping our freshly brewed coffee from our enamel mugs. By rolling up the front covers of the tent, we brought the outdoors indoors (so to speak) and had an uninterrupted view. If you feel like just lounging around, you can also hire a wood-fired hot tub for the day.
The one thing I detest about traditional camping is the communal bathrooms. I loved the AfriCamps tent’s bathroom – a rain shower head and large freestanding ceramic basin. But more importantly, it’s spacious and has enough hot water for the whole family! Trust me, considering everything these tents offer, this is affordable glamping in the Western Cape.
Activities Galore at Oakhurst
Time to explore! AfriCamps Wilderness is both perfect for a couples and family getaway as the activities on offer cater to both groups. We went for a 3km walk in the indigenous forest which led to a tranquil waterfall. The walk is fairly easy as it has no steep inclines and the route is also suitable for mountain biking. You can also take a guided horseback ride through the forest if you wish. Whichever one you choose, the forest sounds are calming to the tired city mind.
The benefit of AfriCamps Wilderness being on Oakhurst Dairy farm is that you get to learn more about their milk and how it eventually reaches your fridge! The farm is also one of the last large working farms on the Garden Route which makes the stay that much more special. Additional activities include a play area at the forest entrance, fishing and canoeing at the dam.
