As is always the case, a getaway was long overdue. But as always, work and life gets in the way of making these things happen. We literally made the decision to go to Glen Eden Farm three days before leaving. As you can imagine, it was quite a scramble! However, thanks to the efficiency of Lekkeslaap; enquiry, payment and booking were all made in a day’s time. Off we went on a Friday afternoon for our long overdue weekend away.
The Road Untravelled
I reluctantly agree when hubby wants to take the R318 to Montagu as I wanted to take Route 62. He reminds me that it’s about taking the road less travelled while simultaneously discovering new ones. We’re practically left alone on the R318 to enjoy the long flat landscapes as there’s no traffic whatsoever. But more about this alternative route in another blog post. I worry that we left home too late but about 200km later we arrive at our destination just in time to take a dip in the pool.
Views for Days at Glen Eden Farm
Glen Eden farm is situated 14km outside of Montagu just off the scenic Route 62. You’d think this close proximity to the road would be noisy but surprisingly the distant sounds of passing cars don’t bother us. The Fish Eagle cottage, our home for the weekend, is placed furthest from the road and we’re treated with spectacular views. The mountains wrap around the farm and offer an abundance of bird life. We sit on the porch and soak in the beauty, allowing the countryside to take over our weary city minds.
In true South African style, the first thing we do is braai! But we haven’t done self catering accommodation in a while so half of the food is not even packed! A quick dash to the local Spar and the problem is solved. Of course hubby’s the one doing the snoek braai while I cool off in the splash pool. Each cottage at Glen Eden comes with its own splash pool, perfect for summer getaways while admiring the views and sizzling meat in the background. We have our supper on the porch as the sun sets behind the mountains. Later the night we do some stargazing. The vast open landscape is the ideal setting for it.
A Day of Fun in Montagu
The next morning we have a bright and early start as we have a tractor ride planned! But first we head to the Montagu Saturday Market in the centre of town to see what the locals have on offer. Montagu is a town rich in history and everyone is friendly and helpful. I’ll be sure to tell you more about my top things to do here in a separate blog post. After a fun filled day of activities, we return to our cottage and stop by the main house to see the cute alpacas. These furry animals are very popular with the kiddies, the owner Claudette tells us, as are the sheep. We have a long interesting conversation with Claudette before taking another dip in the splash pool.
Perfect For You If…
Glen Eden farm is the perfect getaway if you’re looking for tranquillity but still want to be close enough to explore the town. The cottages are evenly spaced from each other and ensure adequate privacy. There’s also the Glen Eden Ranch if you’re into glamping. The ranch has a pod and tepee tent which sleeps four as well as a convenient kitchen and bathroom area. They’ll be expanding the glamping area so be sure to keep an eye on their website. The farm is also pet friendly so you’re welcome to bring your well-behaved fur baby along. Which is exactly what we’ll be doing next time.
