Hubby and I had always driven pass the ribbon-lined tree entrance of Cafe Ruby on Tygerberg Valley Road, Durbanville and whenever we did we’d always proclaim ‘ooo we really do have to pop into this place someday’. A few days ago I promptly told him that we were going to ‘pop in’ there, no more passing by!

Cafe Ruby is situated on the picturesque Klein Roosboom farm. From the road it doesn’t look like much but boy are you in for a surprise once you take that turn-off! Of course Tuesday was one of the hottest days of the year – with temperatures peaking at 38 degrees – in Cape Town so when we arrived just after 10am it was already hot but we weren’t going to miss out on relaxing in and admiring their beautiful garden. So an outside table it was. We immediately ordered a bottle of sparkling water but I simply couldn’t do without my morning coffee. I didn’t want to go for the usual bacon and eggs breakfast so I opted for some french toast with maple syrup, bacon and cream cheese. While hubby (in true South African male style) went for the Boere breakfast which is your typical full-on traditional bacon, eggs, tomato, mushrooms and of course served with boerewors and farm bread. The food was served piping hot and fresh and we happily devoured it.

Our ever helpful and friendly waitress asked us where we were from and we both exclaimed; ‘right around the corner’! Because we simply couldn’t believe how we kept on passing this little gem. She said though, that most people told them the same thing and they even considered getting a bigger sign board! From the garden, the vineyards in the background, the shabby chic decor and delicious food – Cafe Ruby is a must to visit. So next time you’re driving through the Durbanville Wine Valley don’t just pass the red-lined trees – take the turn-off!
