Local Travel is Lekker – Di from The Roaming Giraffe

If you’re a South African, I’m sure you’re familiar with the Local is Lekker phrase. It celebrates and promotes everything proudly South African. This phrase was the inspiration for a new series on my blog – Local Travel is Lekker. I’m an avid supporter of local South African travel and feel extremely blessed to live in this beautiful country. Therefore I’ve decided to feature like-minded bloggers and travellers who share my Local Travel is Lekker sentiment and hopefully this series will inspire our South African citizens to get out there and explore this exquisite country.

This week’s featured blogger is Di Brown from The Roaming Giraffe.

1) What do you love most about South Africa?

I love the diverse natural beauty of the country, but more than that I love the people. We live in interesting and difficult times, but the resilience of South Africans never ceases to inspire and amaze me. In spite of all the bad news that we are bombarded with daily, I am forever encountering ordinary people from all walks of life, doing incredible good. This makes me very proud to call myself South African.

2) What is your first local travel memory?

Going to the Wilderness on the Garden Route with my parents. I was very fortunate in that we went to what is now the SANPARKS Rest Camp for 3 glorious weeks every year just after Christmas. I loathed the drive there, it was before the days of the dual lane N2 and we would inevitably get stuck behind a slow truck, so the trip from Cape Town generally took between 7 and 8 hours.

3) What’s your favourite place to visit in your hometown?

Can I have two favourites please?

The beach with my camera. I am always drawn to water, and totally addicted to beaches. Not to lie about sunbathing, rather to explore, watch the waves, take photos and usually end up getting my clothes wet. I also love going up to the top of Table Mountain. I have a Cable Card which for under R600 a year allows me to go up daily for 365 days.

4) What’s on your South African travel bucket list?

So much. I want to do a long slow road trip exploring the Eastern Cape and the Wild Coast. I need to visit Dinokeng.  I am excited to be exploring Joburg for a few days in August. I would love to visit Limpopo and the Modjaji Rain Queen.  ISimangaliso Wetlands – every year I say I am going to go and then the year runs away from me. I could go on forever…

5) What are your top tips for planning a local getaway?

  • Go with an open mind, be curious and talk to the locals, they know all the best places.
  • Don’t try to pack in too many things in one day. Allow enough time to savour each place or activity.
  • Do a little bit of research before you go, but also allow the days to dictate their own rhythm.
