Local Travel is Lekker – Inge from SA Family Friendly

If you’re a South African, I’m sure you’re familiar with the Local is Lekker phrase. It celebrates and promotes everything South African. This phrase was the inspiration for a new series on my blog – Local Travel is Lekker. I’m an avid supporter of local South African travel and feel extremely blessed to live in this beautiful country. Therefore I’ve decided to feature like-minded bloggers and travellers who share my Local Travel is Lekker sentiment and hopefully this series will inspire our South African citizens to get out there and explore this exquisite country.

This week’s featured blogger is Inge from SA Family Friendly.

1) What do you love most about South Africa?

I love that South Africa has so much to do – everyone will find something that appeals to them here. Fine dining, wine tours, deep sea fishing or tubing down a river? All possible here. If you can dream it, you can do it in South Africa.

2) What is your first local travel memory?

My first local travel memory is of our family holiday in Tsitsikamma National Park. We went swimming in the protected cove, took long hikes and tried to catch the dassies (to no avail – they are way too sharp!). At night we would lie in our chalet and listen to the sea roar. It was magical.

3) What’s your favourite place to visit in your hometown?

We love going to Lifestyle Nursery in Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg. We have a baby girl and she loves playing while we have a delectable breakfast at the Silver Birch. It is always jam-packed with parents and kids, so come early to get a table.

4) What’s on your South African travel bucket list?

I would love to take my family on a safari at Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge. They are one of the few five star safari resorts that are actually family friendly and actively encourages you to bring the kids.

5) What are your top tips for planning a local getaway?

  • When researching accommodation don’t forget about Airbnb.com – they have a great local selection of places to stay and a lot of them are pet and child friendly.
  • Out of season is still a great time to travel in SA, and it can cost you half the price of travelling in season. March and October are especially great months to see our country and avoid the crowds.
  • You don’t have to leave your pets at home – more and more places now accept that furry kids are also part of the family! The luxurious Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga and the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town are prime examples of hotels that have embraced the trend of travelling with your animals.
