Me Time With a Post Pregnancy Massage at Mommy Wellness Day Spa

I’m back with the first post in over two months. After haphazardly posting my Local Travel is Lekker series posts I’ve decided to try and get back into blogging. And yet as I’m typing this I’m down with the flu. Damn you Murphy. I did however get some of my rhythm back two weeks ago with a post pregnancy massage at Mommy Wellness Day Spa in Durbanville. A close friend of mine gifted me with the massage after pitying my swollen ankles. But Why a Post Natal and Not Pre-Natal Massage? I had been Google’ing the crap out of pregnancy massages and spas in Cape Town but more particularly, pregnancy massages in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town as I just never have the patience for Southern Surburbs traffic and lack of parking.  So I’d heard of Mommy Wellness before and had mentioned it casually to my friend. Needless to say, I was a bit surprised when I received the gift voucher for a post natal massage as it was after all my swollen pregnancy ankles that prompted the gift. But my friend knowingly stated (having two boys herself) that I would need it way more after the baby was born. Boy was she right. My Post Pregnancy Massage at Mommy Wellness Day Spa  – Bliss! I had been dreaming of my full body aromatherapy massage for weeks but as luck (and a newborn) would have it, I arrived nearly an half an hour late for my massage at Mommy Wellness Day Spa in Durbanville. Having called them to say I’d be late, I arrived flustered as we’d gotten...
Total Relaxation at Camelot Spa Le Franschhoek

Total Relaxation at Camelot Spa Le Franschhoek

I’ve been having the worst tension in my neck and back lately. No doubt attributed to the hectic year which is about to come to an end. So in an attempt to alleviate some of that tension I decided to book hubby and myself massages at the Camelot Spa Le Franschhoek Hotel. I figured that since Camelot Spa Le Franschhoek had won the Best Hotel Spa at the 2016 Thalgo Worldwide Beauty Tour they had to be good, right? And from the moment of the first email enquiry to the booking and actual treatments, they proved their worth. So off we set last week to the picturesque town of Franschhoek for some R&R. I love scenic drives and the Cape Winelands definitely doesn’t disappoint in that department. We drove down the most beautiful little road overgrown with trees and bushes that took us to our destination set against the mountains. When you arrive at Camelot Spa Le Franschhoek you already know you’re in for a treat of relaxation. The tranquility of the entrance and gardens make that abundantly clear. A Surprise Announcement Upon arrival we filled in a general information form which ensures that you get the best out of your spa treatments and then got changed into our robes. After lounging around in the waiting area we were escorted upstairs by our therapists to the treatment room. I must say, I was a bit worried about my bump as essentially Camelot Spa does not offer pregnancy massages per se. They do however know what to avoid when treating an expecting mama. And yes you read correctly – I...
A Winter Getaway to Botlierskop Private Game Reserve

A Winter Getaway to Botlierskop Private Game Reserve

Whenever it’s getaway time, I like to hit the road as early as possible so that we can get to our destination to let the fun begin! That preference was no different when it was time to head to Botlierskop Private Game Reserve in Mossel Bay two weeks ago. I was up at the icy Cape Town crack of dawn to hit the road! I always consider the drive as part of the getaway as the scenery already does wonders to calm and relax the mind. We arrived at Botlierskop just before sunset and the view from the restaurant was absolutely breathtaking. We stood for about half an hour just taking in the the rolling mountains and chirping of birds while enjoying our complimentary sparkling wine and snacks. We then hopped on the little golf cart and headed to our luxury tented suite which would be our home in the bushveld for the next two nights. Botlierskop is a four star rated game reserve and it shows in everything from their welcoming (your luggage is transported to your suite and valet parking is offered) to the fully equipped suite’s amenities which includes an outdoor shower, private deck, electric blanket and air conditioner (essential for winter!). After having fully unwinded and watched the sunset over the mountains from our private deck albeit being given a fright by the resident Vervet Monkeys, we headed to the cosy restaurant for dinner. We had pre-drinks by one of the three warm fireplaces before sitting down for our delicious three course meal. We had to endure the cold for a brief five minutes after...

Travel | Vindoux Guest Farm

It’s a scorching hot 40 degree day when we hit the road for Vindoux Guest Farm in Tulbagh. This was the first installment of our wedding anniversary celebrations. The second being at Crown restaurant in the Durbanville Wine Valley. The road is hot and busy but as soon as we arrive at our destination the heat is forgotten. Instinctively the first thing I want to do is take photos upon arrival. So imagine my surprise (and colossal disappointment) when I whip out the camera and the dreaded ‘no SD card’ message pops up. Blame it on our overworked minds. Yet again the old faithful iPhone has to step in and save the day. As the social media saying goes; it didn’t happen if there’s no photos. Not Your Average Tree Houses at Vindoux Guest Farm Due to work keeping us very busy, we could only stay for one night and therefore chose the Sunday Night Serenity Special. This included a stay in one of the luxury tree houses where you’re seriously spoiled with 360 degree views. Walking up to your tree house’s front door you’re overlooking the vineyards and swimming pool. Slide open the patio door and you’re greeted by mountains, orchards, grazing zebra and wildebeest! Once we’d come to terms with this sheer beauty, we decide to go for a dip in the pool to cool off and explore the grounds a little further. Romantic Dinner With a View When we get back to our shabby chic decorated tree house, it’s time for our three course dinner. This is devoured on our balcony while taking in our stunning surroundings...
Lifestyle | Mangwanani African Spa

Lifestyle | Mangwanani African Spa

Hubby and I have been in need of professional massages for a while now. In today’s rushed, stressful life it’s so easy to feel rundown and it takes a heavy toll on ones body. So when I saw @miss2beesy Taryn Bester’s tweet about a fabulous spring special at Mangwanani African Spa, I jumped at the chance to make a booking. The Spring Rejuvenation package for two includes a 60 minute North African head, neck and shoulder massage with pressure point therapy, a 30 minute Royal African foot or hand massage with warm rose petal water and a sugar scrub as well as a complimentary body butter. The special was only available at Mangwanani Boutique Spas, so we headed to the V and A Waterfront last week Wednesday to make use of this amazing offer. Traffic into Cape Town was crazy as usual so we arrived in a hurried frenzy, all the while hoping that we weren’t late for our appointments. But welcoming cappuccinos and colourful macarons were all we needed to put our minds at ease. After enjoying our refreshments, we changed into our gowns and slippers and met the therapists in the foyer – where the massages are also done. Mangwanani is not your typical spa, hence the ‘african spa’ addition to the name. Our massages were done in a communal area but I was definitely not self-conscious as it still felt private. However, if like me, you’re used to the traditional lie-down massage experience then this way might take some getting used to. Though I must mention, the therapists work such magic with their hands that in...
Lifestyle | One & Only Spa & Reuben’s

Lifestyle | One & Only Spa & Reuben’s

My husband and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary two weeks ago and naturally making a big fuss about it was in order. I decided to surprise him with a spa treatment but was stumped as to which spa to choose. Enter good ol’ social media informing me that the One & Only Spa V & A Waterfront received the World Spa and Wellness award for the 2014 Hotel Spa of the Year in Africa.  Just like that my dilemma was solved! Now I don’t usually go for upmarket places as some of them have a notorious reputation for being snobbish. But from the moment of the first inquiry email right down to the booking confirmation, I was treated with the utmost patience and respect. I decided to go for the Precious Moments For Two spa package. It included one hour use of the private couples’ suite’s facilities, 120 minutes of treatments for each person and a voucher for dinner for two at Reuben’s restaurant. Prepare for Some Serious R&R I chose the ESPA Men’s Purifying Facial, Shoulder & Scalp Massage and Mankind treatment for hubby. While I opted for the ESPA Hot Stone Back, Face & Scalp Treatment. As we arrive at the One & Only spa we’re given a quick tour of the spa’s facilities, get changed into our robes and are then escorted to the private couples’ suite. We nibble on the complimentary snacks and champagne while relaxing in the Jacuzzi and steam room. Before we know it, an hour had flies past and a knock at the door signals that our treatments are about to...
