If you’re a South African, I’m sure you’re familiar with the Local is Lekker phrase. It celebrates and promotes everything South African. This phrase was the inspiration for a new series on my blog – Local Travel is Lekker. I’m an avid supporter of local South African travel and feel extremely blessed to live in this beautiful country. Therefore I’ve decided to feature like-minded bloggers and travellers who share my Local Travel is Lekker sentiment and hopefully this series will inspire our South African citizens to get out there and explore this exquisite country.

This week’s featured blogger is Meg from Boring Cape Town Chick.

1) What do you love most about South Africa?

Diversity.  If you’re standing on the beach in Camps Bay, turn around, get in your car and drive 100kms to Franschhoek, you feel like you’re in a totally different world! Make it a 400km drive and you’re in the Wilderness, a wonderful lush, foresty jungle right next door to beautiful blue Knysna. Make it a plane ride and you’re in the grimy streets of Johannesburg. It’s inspiring and exciting!

2) What is your first local travel memory?

I grew up in Namibia so my first South African travel memory is visiting Kruger National Park. My folks are from Zimbabwe so they love the hot, dry, dusty climate. Spotting animals has always been a wonderful family game and I still love doing it today!

3) What’s your favourite place to visit in your hometown?

Tough one. I’m not much of a beach person, but will still have to say the ocean. Watching sunsets at Oudekraal are just spectacular. Walking in Kalk Bay is brilliant and the feeling of being in a different world in Cape Point National Park is wonderful. Even looking at the ocean from Signal Hill – water makes the world a better place!

4) What’s on your South African travel bucket list?

Soweto! I would like to spend more time in the townships of South Africa.

5) What are your top tips for planning a local getaway?

Pack lightly but practically. Mr John (my hubby) and I share 1 medium suitcase when we go for weekends away. It makes life MUCH easier when you aren’t hauling a bunch of things around. Keep it simple but practical (Yes you will have to sacrifice a few pairs of shoes!).
