If you’re a South African, I’m sure you’re familiar with the Local is Lekker phrase. It celebrates and promotes everything South African. This phrase was the inspiration for a new series on my blog – Local Travel is Lekker. I’m an avid supporter of local South African travel and feel extremely blessed to live in this beautiful country. Therefore I’ve decided to feature like-minded bloggers and travellers who share my Local Travel is Lekker sentiment and hopefully this series will inspire our South African citizens to get out there and explore this exquisite country.

This week’s featured blogger is Asha from Life By Asha Singh.

1) What do you love most about South Africa?

I love how no matter where in SA I go, I feel so at home. You can have a lekker braai whether you’re in Western Cape or Limpopo and those tjops will be just as juicy!

2) What is your first local travel memory?

The first time traveling I remember quite clearly was a trip to Joburg when I was 8. It was my first time on a plane so it was the most exciting and scary experience! For someone that had always lived in a small town it gave me a chance to experience the city and boy did I love it.

3) What’s your favourite place to visit in your hometown?

I’m from the KZN South Coast and I would say my favourite place is just any beach. We have some stunning beaches like Margate and Hibberdine and they’re definitely my favourite thing on the South Coast.

4) What’s on your South African travel bucket list?

In terms of places I haven’t been – definitely Sun City. This year I also plan to go to the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth again, but this time really explore everything they have to offer.

5) What are your top tips for planning a local getaway?

Don’t overplan! The longest in advance I’ve properly planned a trip is a week. A WEEK. When it comes to local travel there really isn’t much need to plan and it’s much better to be spontaneous and flexible. You wanted to go to Durban but places are fully booked? Go to Ballito instead. You wanted to fly to Cape Town but last minute flights are too expensive? Make a road trip out of it. I find that planning in advance can be so stressful so spontaneous trips work much better for me, however if you’re someone that feels like they need to have a plan maybe try and just relax on the finer details.
