If you’re a South African, I’m sure you’re familiar with the Local is Lekker phrase. It celebrates and promotes everything proudly South African. This phrase was the inspiration for a new series on my blog – Local Travel is Lekker. I’m an avid supporter of local South African travel and feel extremely blessed to live in this beautiful country. Therefore I’ve decided to feature like-minded bloggers and travellers who share my Local Travel is Lekker sentiment and hopefully this series will inspire our South African citizens to get out there and explore this exquisite country.
This week’s featured blogger is Dominique from Dominique in the City.
1) What do you love most about South Africa?
It’s beauty, its nature and it’s people! We have one of the most beautiful countries in the world!
2) What is your first local travel memory?
I grew up in a very small mining town in Namibia, it had one shop, so we did many road trips to Cape Town to stock up on all the lekker things we couldn’t get in Nam. My first memories is driving at night and watching the stars from the car window. I am also instantly transported to those days whenever I fill up my car with petrol – that smell gets me every time.
3) What’s your favourite place to visit in your hometown?
My mom’s house. I know it’s boring, but really it’s my favourite place.
4) What’s on your South African travel bucket list?
The Garden Route. I did it years ago, and I want to go back and take lots of photos. And the Northern Cape – Springbok, Pofadder, all those quirky little towns and definitely the Richtersveld.
5) What are your top tips for planning a local getaway?
Do some research, but don’t over plan your time at your destination. I like to plan a few activities or outings, but the rest of the time I like to go with the flow.
