“I am an African.

I owe my being to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the glades, the rivers, the deserts, the trees, the flowers, the seas and the ever-changing seasons that define the face of our native land.

The dramatic shapes of the Drakensberg, the soil-coloured waters of the Lekoa, iGqili noThukela, and the sands of the Kgalagadi, have all been panels of the set on the natural stage on which we act out the foolish deeds of the theatre of our day”.

Now if that excerpt from Thabo Mbeki’s speech doesn’t give you goose bumps and evoke some African travel wanderlust in your soul; nothing will. I’m a big advocate for local travel. The African continent is vast, diverse and most importantly, budget-friendly – so I see absolutely no reason to seek adventure beyond its borders.

But why the love for African travel?

In all honesty, I too was nearly lured into the ‘must do European vacation’ a few years ago. Due to various reasons, our plans were foiled and we ended up booking a full-board South African safari getaway at game lode in the Karoo. Our itinerary included; a game drive spotting majestic giraffes, an early morning river cruise, a picnic overlooking the Kamanassie River and daily three course authentic South African food – all at unbelievable value for money.  I was sold. South Africa had captured me with her beauty and I vowed never to betray her again with thoughts of an overseas holiday.
