If you’re a South African, I’m sure you’re familiar with the Local is Lekker phrase. It celebrates and promotes everything proudly South African. This phrase was the inspiration for a new series on my blog – Local Travel is Lekker. I’m an avid supporter of local South African travel and feel extremely blessed to live in this beautiful country. Therefore I’ve decided to feature like-minded bloggers and travellers who share my Local Travel is Lekker sentiment and hopefully this series will inspire our South African citizens to get out there and explore this exquisite country.

This week’s featured local traveller is Letishia Charles of Queen Bee Marketing.

1) What do you love most about South Africa?

I really love that I can leave the suburbs where I live, drive just 1-2hrs away and I am in the beautiful and peaceful countryside where the pace is so much slower – just perfect! There are just so many amazing spots to visit, near and far, and I haven’t even begun to discover them all.

2) What is your first local travel memory?

Our parents took us on a road trip to Oudtshoorn when I was about 9 years old and we stayed in these very rustic rondavels. I also particularly remember visiting Cango Caves – such an amazing experience!

3) What’s your favourite place to visit in your hometown?

I live in the beautiful Mother City and my absolute favourite place to go to is the Constantia Green Belt with my family and our furkid!

4) What is the best South African food you’ve had on a local road trip or getaway?

Oh, where do I begin… from an Eland Burger at !Khwa ttu on the West Coast, to a delicious home cooked lunch prepared by local Groendal (Franschhoek) resident, Olivia, at Oude Slaven Restaurant and more. Too many to choose from!

5) What’s on your South African travel bucket list?

So many… Places like Mpumalanga (God’s Window), Orange River, Drakensberg, Kruger National Park and so on…

6) What are your top tips for planning a local getaway?

If travelling with a kid/s, which we do most of the time, we try to make sure that the destination will have lots of activities, farm animals, kid-friendly menus and wide open spaces. Also interesting and educational places in the area are a bonus.
