As soon as you hit the gravel road turn-off to Karoo Pride En Route 62 you immediately get that good old farm stay feeling. Surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains this self-catering Montagu accommodation offers a no frills family friendly stay. Previously known as Ravenna Mountain Retreat and situated along the Route 62 between Montagu and Barrydale, Karoo Pride stopped apricot farming four years ago to start farming lucern.

Karoo Pride is located within close proximity to most of the Montagu attractions which makes it the perfect base to explore from. For example, the popular Protea Farm tractor ride is a 40 minute drive from the farm. Our little family was invited to spend a relaxing weekend at this child-friendly Montagu accommodation.

What’s on offer?

Karoo Pride has eight self-catering cottages which are equipped with all the getaway necessities such as kitchen and braai facilities. You can also add them to your list of pet friendly accommodations in the Western Cape because you’re more than welcome to bring your fur babies along. The Montagu farm accommodation has four hiking trails that are great for family walks. The hiking trails vary in length with the shortest being 45 minutes and the longest 120 minutes. During summer you can cool off in the pool after your hike.

Our stay at Karoo Pride

Karoo Pride En Route 62

We stayed in the Honeybush cabin which is a bit more secluded than the others. The cottage falls into their African Sound cottages 2-sleeper accommodation group. However, I would easily put this little wood cabin into the honeymoon accommodation category because of its cosy feel and the fact that it’s got an outdoor shower! The adjoining bathroom also has a beautiful victorian bath which we unfortunately did not use due to the current Cape Town drought.

Even though the cottage has limited space, it was warmer than the other cottages which made evenings a lot better. The small space also proved to be good to keep an eye on our one year old but admittedly we did struggle to manoeuvre around his camp cot once it was set up next to the bed. The furnishings are a bit dated but all functional. Bearing in mind that Karoo Pride provides basic accommodation with the focus being on its beautiful setting. The cabin therefore has lovely views of the surrounding forest.

Hosts Tiffany and Rocco sell homemade mushroom burgers on Saturdays at R50 each. The burgers went down very well after our day of exploring the surrounding areas’ attractions. If you’re looking for family-friendly Montagu accommodation, Karoo Pride is one of the places you should consider. There’s a lush green lawn in front of the reception area as well as a jungle gym directly opposite. For the moms and dads, we enjoyed our sundowner moment at the lookout deck overlooking the dam and majestic mountains and I’m sure you’ll enjoy your glass of red there too!

Good to know

The farm shop located at reception stocks all the basics you might’ve forgotten at home and came in handy when hubby realised he forgot his morning coffee’s sugar! The farm has limited cellphone reception but if you can’t bear to go without social media for the weekend, there’s a WiFi hotspot at reception. Karoo Pride is currently running a midweek special at R650 per night for a 2-sleeper unit and R450 per night for single occupancy.
