There are few things more relaxing than a visit to a farm. We are fortunate to have quite a few Western Cape farm stays to choose from and the bonus is that the majority are family-friendly too. Our family has had many memorable getaways at working farm accommodation in and around Cape Town; the best thing about these visits is that you get the full countryside living experience. Out of those countless road trips, here are a few Western Cape farm stays to add to your list of places to stay.

Mountain bike trails galore as well as hiking trails with unusual rock formations to marvel at makes it the ideal destination. Sheep can also be heard in their nearby camps which is a cute attraction for the kids.  Kaleo Guest farm’s cottages overlook a beautiful dam set against the backdrop of rugged mountains. The cottages are the best equipped I’ve seen – even the kiddies have their own eating utensils! Everything is provided to make your self-catered stay as stress free as possible. |

Tucked away in the Langeberg Mountains, right at the end of the De Hoop Kloof you’ll find the Laaiplaas farm – home to the De Hoop cottages. Situated on a working fruit farm, these Western Cape mountain cottages offer affordable accommodation in the Robertson Wine Valley. The restored cottages were originally farm workers’ houses and have been named after the men who are still working on the farm. De Hoop has beautiful walking trails, some of which lead to farm dams where you can take a dip in on a hot summer’s day. |

Glen Eden Farm – Montagu

If you’re looking for animal farm accommodation in the Western Cape with cute furry creatures, the alpacas at Glen Eden will certainly do the trick! Their beautiful cottages are both child and pet-friendly as they’re fully enclosed with picket fencing. Each cottage also has its very own pool with amazing views of the surrounding mountains. Situated within the Marloth Nature Reserve the area is abundant in birdlife and provides the perfect family getaway. There’s also the Glen Eden Ranch if you’re into glamping. The ranch has a pod and tepee tent which sleeps four as well as a convenient kitchen and bathroom area. |

Karoo Pride en Route 62 – between Montagu and Barrydale

Karoo Pride En Route 62

Previously known as Ravenna Mountain Retreat and situated along the Route 62 between Montagu and Barrydale, Karoo Pride stopped apricot farming four years ago to start farming lucern. It’s the ideal family farm accommodation in the Western Cape as the cottages are fuss-free but surrounded by natural views. Karoo Pride has four hiking trails which vary in length, with the shortest being 45 minutes and the longest 120 minutes. A lush green lawn and jungle gym keep the kids entertained while mom and dad enjoy sundowners on the lookout deck with stunning mountain views. |

For just over an hour’s drive, you can stay at luxury farm accommodation in Cape Town. Situated in the small town of Hermon on a working sheep farm right next to the Elandsberg Nature Reserve, Bartholomeus Klip provides the full farm stay package. The five-bedroom farmhouse and family-friendly farm cottage are cosy yet tastefully decorated. The farm also offers a multitude of activities: game drives, mountain bike trails, walking routes and canoeing on the dam. All of this makes Bartholomeus Klip one of the most authentic and best farm stays in the Western Cape. |

Tranquil Western Cape Farm Stays – the best kind of getaway

Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city to one of these tranquil Western Cape farm stays will restore mind and body. The countryside is truly the perfect getaway anytime of the year as there’s always something to do, although it’s also great to do absolutely nothing! For more options, you can also make use of Airbnb to search for farm cottages to rent in the Western Cape as not all of them will have a dedicated website.
