Even though we’re still technically grounded due to the COVID-19 pandemic with leisure travel and on-site alcohol consumption not being allowed, we are however still fully allowed to dream and plan for future recreational visits to the Cape Winelands. And that’s exactly what we’ll do.

Founded in 1682, Blaauwklippen is one of the oldest wine farms in Stellenbosch. The first Zinfandel vineyards to be planted in South Africa were established on Blaauwklippen in 1977. This has consequently led to the wine estate producing world-renowned Blaauwklippen Zinfandel in addition to their Méthode Cap Classique being the only sparkling wine made from 100% Zinfandel grapes using the traditional Champagne method in South Africa. Altogether the range is completed with the White Zinfandel and the Zinfandel infused Gin.

After that impressive introduction I’m sure you want to know more about what Blaauwklippen Vineyards has to offer!

From a classic wine tasting to a trendy gin tasting and delightful wine pairings – there’s something for everyone!  Indulge in a range of artisanal chocolates paired with a white wine, red wine, aperitif, noble late harvest and 10-year-old potstilled brandy. Or delight in the macaron and wine pairing; five delicious macarons paired with five wines. You can also explore three of their premium red wines paired with handmade fudge. The unexpected cherry on top however is the trio of craft gins, each paired with nougat, a unique garnish and tonic on the side.

Relax and Eat at Blaauwklippen

hamm and uys restaurant

Hamm & Uys, the laidback Blaauwklippen restaurant by vibrant TV chefs and caterers Johnny Hamman and Marius Uys focuses on “the good, honest food you grew up with”. Fridays call for pizza and live music under the beautiful big trees of the wine farm. The mussel pot, bone marrow and burgers are a must to order as you won’t be disappointed by both the taste and generous portion sizes! To keep the younger ones busy, there’s also a jungle gym and some cute farm animals a few metres away from the outside eating area.

Even though I’ve never been, the highly popular Blaauwklippen family market is held every Sunday (outside of lockdown of course) on the lush green lawns of this Cape Winelands wine farm. A wide selection of food, arts and crafts, live music, monthly antiques fair and the wine estate’s child-friendly activities are just a few of the things you can look forward to experiencing.

Blaauwklippen is unfortunately closed for day visitors and guests for the duration of the level 3 lockdown.
