Travel | West Coast National Park

As with most things in our rushed and busy lives these days, a road trip was way overdue. So when happened to be that hubby and I were off together on a weekend (very rare) we took advantage of the South African National Parks free week which ran from the 14-19 September and headed to the West Coast National Park in Langebaan.

The main reason we obviously went was to witness the park’s flower season beauty which happens every year August and September. When we arrived, we headed straight for the Postberg section of the park which only opens for flower season every year. But the photo opportunities along the way were the real treat! West Coast National Park is home to quite a few animal species so if you don’t drive slowly (which is mandatory anyway) and don’t look around, you might miss them. But I definitely think the tortoises steal the show with their cute little ‘back-houses’.

After ooo’ing and aah’ing over the flowers we stopped over at the picnic/braai area alongside and the sea and took a stroll on the beach. I cannot describe the unspoiled beauty of this park in words, pictures don’t even do it justice, you simply have to experience it for yourself. After frolicking a bit more in the park’s numerous photo ops we reluctantly headed home.

We had only been to West Coast National Park once before and even then we couldn’t explore every corner of it. It is massive in size and abundant in beauty. Just to give you an idea, we covered nearly 70kms on one side of the park only, there were a number of attractions we left out. So my suggestion would be to come early and take your time exploring the park. This park is an all-rounder for all ages – mountain bike trails, hiking trails, picnic/braai areas, houseboats and cottages for accommodation, a restaurant and views galore. So bring the grandparents, siblings, and toddlers along, you’re guaranteed to have a memorable day. P.S. hope you enjoy the pictures;-)
